Chemistry
Introduction
As a famous subject in science, chemistry plays an indispensable role in people's production and life.
Chemistry is included as a module in the Science curriculum during secondary education in Ireland. The high school chemistry curriculum is comprehensive, allowing students to engage in the subject even if they lack a foundation in chemistry from earlier stages. The topics covered in high school chemistry include modern atomic theory, the periodic law, properties of elements and chemical reactions, radioactive elements, basic theoretical calculations, gases, acid-base theory, redox theory, chemical equilibrium, reaction rates, environmental chemistry, and organic chemistry.
For students who enjoy conducting experiments, chemistry is a fantastic choice. Students have the opportunity to personally perform 28 chemical experiments, such as acid-base titration, flame reactions (similar to fireworks), extraction of eugenol (creating your own fragrance), and homemade soap production.
The Leaving Cert chemistry examination primarily focuses on assessing theoretical knowledge. Candidates can opt for either Ordinary Level or Higher Level papers based on their learning level and preferences.
The two examination papers employ different scoring methods. For more details, please refer to the Leaving Cert & CAO points. In this description, we will use Ordinary Level as an example. The examination paper consists of two sections, with a total score of 400 points and a three-hour time limit. The candidates' final scores are calculated as a percentage. Section A (approximately 30% of the total score) emphasizes experiments, requiring students to understand experimental principles, provide brief descriptions of specific experimental processes, and perform simple chemical calculations. Section B (approximately 70% of the total score) focuses on theoretical knowledge and its application. Students are expected to grasp fundamental theories and utilize them to explain chemical phenomena and solve calculations.
The Leaving Cert chemistry exam is exclusively a written test and does not include a practical component.
Chemistry and physics classes often overlap in terms of content. Some of the knowledge covered in chemistry is also applicable to physics. However, it is not advisable to take both Physics and Chemistry as separate subjects due to their extensive range of topics and the challenges associated with studying them. For further information, please refer to the Introduction to Physical & Chemistry.
